The Cascades Female Factory hosted our annual Open Day which coincided with Mother’s Day on Sunday 14 May.
The day was a huge success with FREE ENTRY and activities offered. Families had the chance to discover stories of the convict women and their children that were transported to Van Diemen’s Land. For those who were revisiting the site we provided chance to explore the historic site which has had significant improvements to the conservation and interpretation since being included as one of the Australian World Heritage Convict Sites.
Various activities ran through the day including a brief but very well attended theatrical performance from the actors in the very popular “Her Story”, the story of the life of a convict woman who was incarcerated at the Cascades Female Factory.
The Matron’s Cottage was also open to all and this historic home showed guests a number of displays. We were also fortunate to have Dr Christina Henri present throughout the day to share with visitors information about her “Roses from the Heart” project which commemorates the female convicts transported to Australia, with a number of bonnets on display.
