The Port Arthur Historic Sites are an outstanding example of how conservation needs and the requirements of tourism can be successfully balanced and managed.
Our staffing reflects this diversity. Many of the occupations offered at the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority (PAHSMA) are unique to the State Service.
Our Tourism Operations employees are primarily responsible for ensuring that the Sites’ visitors receive the best possible customer service together with a unique and interactive experience. Occupations in this department include Day and Ghost Tour Guides, Courtesy Vehicle Drivers, Food & Beverage, Retail and Bookings & Ticketing Assistants.
Our Conservation Department employs archaeologists, historical researchers, curatorial staff and other heritage professionals together with Buildings & Works and Grounds & Gardens crews that have unique historic building and horticultural knowledge and skills.
Our Finance and Administration Department provides finance, human resources, information technology and administrative services to the whole of the Authority. The Finance and Administration area provides employment for occupations such as accounts payable and receivable officers, human resource specialists together with staff undertaking other administrative related functions.
The Port Arthur Historic Site is located on the Tasman Peninsula approximately 100 kilometres from Hobart. The surrounding coastline of the Tasman Peninsula is a mix of both spectacular cliffs and sheltered waterways. It is home to some of Tasmania’s best fishing and diving locations as well as many breathtaking coastal bushwalks.
Our peak employment season is from December to April but outside this peak tourism season, we still have job vacancies on a regular basis. There is a wide variety of positions available. Our staff are crucial to the service we provide to our visitors. Whilst providing the opportunity to work in a unique World Heritage environment we aim to make available comprehensive training to our employees. We provide our employees with a uniform, offer discounts in our Food and Retail outlets and may be able to provide assistance with accommodation.
Fixed Term and Seasonal Employment
We offer fixed term, casual and seasonal vacancies in many positions during the busy summer tourist season. These positions commence between October and December and generally continue up until the end of April. However start and finish dates can be negotiated so as to coincide with university semester breaks and for other personal requirements. The service needs and employment opportunities at the Port Arthur Historic Site vary depending on seasonal fluctuations.
Additionally, in recent years PAHSMA has experienced significant growth in the number of international visitors. Given this increasing service need, PAHSMA welcomes applications from individuals with proficiency in languages in addition to English. Positions available over this period are:
- Food & Beverage Assistants work both front and back of house in either of our two cafes or at our Bistro
- Bookings & Ticketing Assistants sell site entry tickets and provide information and assistance to our visitors
- Retail Assistants look after visitors in our Gift Shop
- Cooks, working at both the Port Café and Felons Restaurant
- Tour Guides deliver guided tours to groups of visitors providing an insight into the history of the Port Arthur Historic Site
- Ghost Tour Guides provide spine-tingling night tours to visitors
- Retail Assistants and Tour Guides at the Cascades Female Factory, South Hobart
- We also offer a limited number of fixed-term vacancies for Cleaners and Labourers.
Much of our employment needs are met through our Fixed Term Register which is used to fill vacancies for the above mentioned positions.
Pre-employment courses are conducted each year during July-August to help develop skills in hospitality, tourism and guiding. The training is free and is offered in partnership with the Skills Institute. Participants receive nationally recognised training and many graduates have been successful in gaining a position at the Port Arthur Historic Site or other local businesses.
Courses are advertised in local press from time to time.
