Premier to launch book about the lives of women convicts

Premier Lara Giddings will launch a new book which tells of the lives of women incarcerated in the Ross Female Factory.

From 1848 to 1854 the Ross Female Factory processed thousands of women transported to Van Diemen’s Land providing “a complete institution for the exploitation of female convicts in the service of the great houses of the Midlands.”

But, as the authors discovered, many convict women who passed through the Ross Female Factory found ways to challenge the convict system, to make their mark. Here for the first time their poignant, tragic and inspirational stories are told.

The book, “Convict Lives at the Ross Female Factory”, has been written by members of the Female Convicts Research Group (Tasmania) and edited by internationally renowned author, Emeritus Professor Lucy Frost.

The book will be launched by Premier Giddings at the Cascades Female Factory at 11am on Sunday November 6. The launch will take place in Yard 3, and all are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
