The Cascades Female Factory Historic Site is a largely outdoor site with two buildings, the History and Interpretation Centre and the Matron’s Cottage. We understand that there are a range of needs to be considered when you visit our historic site.  If we can assist you in any way with your experience, please contact us.

The Convict Women’s Tour does require some walking and standing for periods of up to 10 minutes at a time. Limited bench seating is available throughout the yards and in the tour assembly area. Ground surfaces are primarily gravel (compacted in some areas, loose in others), steel plates, sandstone blocks and paved areas.

Mobility aids, wheelchairs & strollers

Due to the heritage nature of the site and the gravel ground covering, some areas may be challenging for wheelchairs, strollers and mobility aids such as walking frames to access unassisted.

  • The History and Interpretation Centre is fully accessible, including the welcome space, exhibition, multi-purpose space (for education activities) and gift shop.
  • Accessible/ambulant bathrooms are provided.
  • Alternative access points can be arranged into heritage yards where the tours are held, through the front gate, via the public footpath.
  • The Convict Women’s Tour is accessible with some assistance. Please contact us at the time of booking so that access can be facilitated.

Companion Cards

Companion Card holders receive free entry to the site for their companion carer. Please contact us to book your visit and ensure that you bring your Companion Card to present on arrival.

Visitors with sensory sensitivities

The entryways into the Cascades Female Factory are tall dark and narrow passages that include a sound installation, which may cause some discomfort for visitors with sensory and in particular, auditory sensitivities.  Please contact us if you would like to arrange an alternate entry point.

Parents travelling with young children
